Lucius’ show was sold-out the weeks before and the room is a sea of fans. Hard-hitting drums kick in followed by male backing vocals that shift focus. A balanced sound and well-crafted songs make it easy to like the Brooklyn band even if you haven’t heard them on TV or read their rave reviews.

A slow, lush ballad comes next. It’s classic country with big drums and pretty tone guitar; a heartbreak of a tune that builds and aches. With three-part harmony and sweet wailing guitar, “Don’t Just Sit There” is poignant. A hitting pop start relaxes into a flowing bridge.

“Did you find love? Have you found love?” the lyrics ask. Male vocals balance the female in a big build with a sweet, acapella finish.

Lucius manages a blend of country and mod that is singular — Blondie stirred into Patsy Cline with tempting percussion. Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe sing blissful harmonies or echo treble in unison. Their voices soar over drums and synth as Dan Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri combine guitar, keys, and percussion along with male vocals for layers that crescendo and haunt. Sixties rhythms and tone welcome the listener with timeless tracks for an uplifting live show.

The band put out an EP in 2012 and played SXSW and Bonnaroo this year. Their debut album, Wildewoman, is out October 15 on NYC label Mom+Pop.
