Bloomberg makes nice with foe

Mike Bloomberg made a very public peace offering yesterday to one of his most vocal critics, sitting down with newly elected public advocate Bill de Blasio at a Lower Manhattan diner.

The mayor may be forced to play nicer with a lot of people after his narrow victory over Bill Thompson.

“There is now citywide electoral hay to be made of taking on the mayor,” said David Birdsell of Baruch College.

De Blasio noted many local Democrats didn’t back Thompson. “I hope a lot of people are kicking themselves today and saying we should have been there for our nominee,” he said. “I was there.”

He vowed greater oversight of the mayor and said he expected the City Council to change its “tone.”

Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a Bloomberg ally, could be challenged for her leadership post in January.

“The City Council can make it very difficult for the mayor,” Birdsell said.
