You could say a Medford native is going to be the commencement speaker at Harvard University this year, but that just wouldn’t be enough.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will give the keynote address during Harvard’s 363rd commencement on May 29, the university said Wednesday. He will speak during the afternoon commencement exercises.

Bloomberg, who was raised in Medford, received his business degree from Harvard Business School in 1966. The school’s renovated Baker Library — Bloomberg Center is named for his father.

In 2001, Bloomberg was elected mayor of New York City and served three terms.

“Mike Bloomberg’s career represents a rare blend of public leadership, private sector entrepreneurship and powerful philanthropic engagement,” Harvard President Drew Faust said in a statement. “He has led one of the world’s great cities, built one of the nation’s most influential information services, and generously committed his attention and resources to worthy causes in public health, the environment, civic life, the arts, and — not least of all — education.I greatly look forward to welcoming him in May. “
