Less than four months after Blue Rodeo played for tens of thousands of fans at Bluesfest, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor returned to the National Capital Region to play for a much more intimate crowd last night.
In their first tour as a duo in 31 years of making music together, the band’s founding members played a sold-out show at Wakefield’s Black Sheep Inn to promote their new album, The Things We Left Behind.
Released next Tuesday, their 12th album features songs that were written for vinyl, a format that has allowed them greater musical freedom, Cuddy said before the show yesterday.
“It gave us so much more freedom to treat the songs how we wanted and make them the length we thought was appropriate instead of cram them onto one CD.”
There’s a resurgence of vinyl, added Keelor.
“There’s a certain romance in it again. Vinyl has never gone away but in the last few years, it’s really started to come back a lot.”
Looking back on the last three decades, Cuddy said they’ve been fortunate.
“We never succumbed to just making money or doing things that we don’t think have integrity for whatever elusive success might be at the other end. It’s been a good life.”
