Bombardier slashes 3,000 jobs globally

Bombardier Inc. says it’s prepared to make more cuts if its markets weaken further even as it announced 3,000 jobs will be slashed to cope with weaker demand for business jets. The cuts impact Canada, the U.S., Mexico and Northern Ireland.

The layoffs affect about 1,500 workers in Canada and reflect Bombardier’s move to cut production of business jets by 25 per cent. The Montreal plant will be hardest hit as 1,030 jobs will be cut. That’s in addition to 710 announced in February. Toronto will shed 475 jobs, Belfast 975, the U.S. 470 and Mexico 50.

Bombardier earned $1 billion in annual profits last year for the first time in its history.
