Voters awaited results of the 2015 municipal election as the numbers rolled in Tuesday night.

In all, 53 Massachusetts cities and towns took to the polls on Tuesday. In Boston, the race would determine who holds each of 13 seats on the City Council.

As expected, turnout for the election was low. The Boston Election Department reported just 10.9 percent of Boston voters casting ballots by 6 p.m. Polls in the city closed at 8 p.m.

In District 4, this year’s marquee race, longtime Councilor Charles Yancey faced a challenge from political newcomer Andrea Campbell. The district includes parts of Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, Mattapan and Roslindale.

Incumbents Frank Baker (District 3), Timothy McCarthy (District 5) and Tito Jackson (District 7) each held off challengers to keep their seats.

Running unopposed were incumbents Salvatore Lamattina (District 1), Bill Linehan (District 2), Matt O’Malley (District 6), Josh Zakim (District 8) and Mark Ciommo (District 9).

Outside Boston, a race to watch was the relatively high profile contest to fill the State Senate vacancy left by Sen. Thomas Kennedy for the Second Plymouth Bristol district.
