Boston firm wins Blue Ivy battle with Beyoncé and Jay-Z

A Boston-based event firm recently won a trademark protection battle with celebrity couple Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, who petitioned to trademark their daughter Blue Ivy Carter’s name shortly after her birth.

Last week, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled trademark protection of the name “Blue Ivy” to Veronica Alexandra, the firm’s founder and owner.

Alexandra told Metro Monday that she felt “relieved” when the news came through on Oct. 16.

“It also felt like a green light, like I can move forward now with portions of my business plans that I didn’t want to put any more effort into rolling out if I had to deal with someone knocking on my door with legality garbage that could possibly waste my time,” Alexandra said.

While it is unclear how the music moguls came up with their daughter’s colorful name, Alexandra said she believed Beyoncé had seen her company’s handle.

“I thought that somebody of that stature would have taken the time to review what is out there,” she said, adding that when the celebrity baby was born, she was nervous people would think she ripped it off.

However, her company has been around since 2009, far longer than the baby’s January 2012 birthday.

“I didn’t want there to be a question in the mind that we came later,” Alexandra said.

The couple reportedly wanted to trademark their daughter’s name to reserve it for possible use as a brand name for a line of baby-related products, like carriages and diaper bags.
