The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the Boston Harbor yesterday when they came across an unusual sight: a man camped out on a barge.
“Yes, this is the first time we’ve seen anything like this in the area,” said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Simpson.
The man, Michael Smith, told a local television news station that he sleeps on the barge at night and travels waters on his canoe during the day.
U.S. Coast Guard officials have not made contact with Smith, according to Simpson, however they are keeping an eye on the situation.
Yesterday’s mild weather probably made for a pleasant day at sea for Smith, but winter on the water may not be smooth sailing.
“It is definitely something we wouldn’t recommend; stay out there through the winter or inclement weather,” Simpson said.
There is no word on who owns the barge, Simpson said.
“Judging from the pictures, it seems like a little bigger than his tent.”
