On Sunday, the MSPCA’s seventh annual Walk for Animals fundraiser will be headlined by Boston Marathon hero Carlos Arredondo, who will lead hundreds on a day-long trek to benefit Boston-area animals.

Organizers describe the event as a cornerstone of the MSPCA’s community relations and fundraising efforts. It is expected to draw about 2,500 participants — most with their dogs — to three separate walks in Boston, Methuen and Centerville, Mass.

In its seven-year history the Walk for Animals has raised more than $1 million to support the MSPCA’s programs, and organizers hope to raise $350,000 this year to fund its three adoption centers as well as its law enforcement, advocacy and veterinary services programs.

Walking at the front of the pack will be Boston Marathon bombing hero Carlos Arredondo, who will be marching with his wife and two dogs on a day designed to celebrate the role companion animals play in people’s lives.

The Boston Walk for Animals kicks off at noon at Boston Common. Registration is open.
