Officer Eddie B. Odney, a nine-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, is expected to plead guilty to access device fraud ata federal hearing on Monday.
The 38-year-old can avoid prison time if the judge accepts his plea and the officerpermanently resigns from the force, the Boston Herald reported. Odney allegedly bought $5,000 worth of department store gift cards from a member of a shoplifting ring, according to the Boston Globe.Authorities contend Odney knew the cards were obtained illegally. He made over $1,600 in purchases at various department stores with the cards last year, according to legal filings The officer was placed on administrative leave in February, theGlobe reported at the time. The plea deal he struck withU.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office includes one year of probation in lieu of a prison sentence as long as Odneyresigns from the Boston police and gives up any chance of reinstatement. U.S. District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf is not tied to that agreement, the Boston Herald reported, and Odney could face up to 10 years in prison.
