Want to make your holiday cards extra-unique this year, but don’t have a crafty bone in your body? Don’t worry, a Boston startup is here to help.
LiziCards, a Boston-based greeting card company, launched Monday with the aim to change how people pick out and send off cards for all occasions.
The company goes beyond offering unique designs by letting users upload personal photos and voice recordings through its mobile app, so they can create truly intimate messages.
Gyongyi Dalnoki, the founder of the company, was inspired by her two-year-old daughter, Lizi. Dalnoki moved here from Hungary with her husband, and when Lizi was born, Dalnoki wanted to send custom Christmas cards back to her parents.
While many people create their own holiday cards featuring family photos, Dalnoki wanted to go a step further and add a recorded, personalized message, but she didn’t see that option anywhere.
“Since I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to make it myself,” she said in a statement. “I studied economics at university, not creative design, so this was a bit of a challenge for me, but I’ve always been good at crafts and I was sure I could get it done.”
That one card took more than a week to make, she said, “but when my parents opened it, saw pictures of Lizi and heard her sweet voice cooing and babbling, it was well worth the effort.”
That card stayed on their mantle for months after Christmas.
“When they told me that… [and that] whenever they walked, by they would open it to hear Lizi’s voice, I realized I had come up with something special,” Dalnoki said. “LiziCards was born.”
The company launched Monday with card designs for Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s, new baby announcements, birthdays and more. All the cards are designed by award-winning graphic designers and artists, according to Dalnoki, and assembled by hand in Boston.
Once you build the card and record the message through the app, the company mails the cards either to you, or to your recipient.
More designs will be added over the coming months so that LiziCards has an option for every occasion, and so that Dalnoki can achieve her goal of making “the most personal and best quality greeting cards,” that “put a smile on both the face of the person sending the card, and the person receiving it.”
