A 5-year-old girl found wandering the streets of Grafton alone led police to a grisly scene in her home Wednesday morning: one woman dead and a man wounded with a knife, reports said.

A Grafton police officer found the little girl, who authorities have not identified, wandering along Route 140 in her pajamas around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, WHDH reported.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, in a press conference, said the girl told officers “mommy is sick” and “mommy is sleeping,” WCVB reported.

Police took the little girl back to her home at 55 Worcester street and, after forcing their way in, found a man holding a knife that was protruding from his neck and a woman dead on the floor of a bedroom, WHDH reported. The couple has been identified as 36-year-old Kelly Sugarman, and her husband Michael Sugarman, 42, authorities said.

Michael Sugarman was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, WCVB reported.

The little girl was also taken to a hospital for evaluation before the Department of Children and Families took custody, WHDH reported.

“Keeping in mind we are early in the investigation, the appropriate charges will be forthcoming,” Early said, according to WCVB. “The medical examiner has accepted the case and an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of Ms. Sugarman’s death.”
