A Rhode Island man died in a two vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on I-495 in Hopkinton.

Makthra Men, 23, of Cranston, was critically injured after his car spun out of control on the northbound side of the highway and struck a tractor trailer around 1:45 p.m., Saturday.

Men was taken to UMass Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

The roads were plagued with snow and ice as the region weathered the first significant snowfall of the year.

The truck driver, Daniel Matthews, 33, of Northborough was not injured, nor was a passenger riding in his truck.

State Police are investigating the crash.

“The loss of life on our roadways continues to be a serious issue. For the most recent year on record, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Highway Safety Division says that 349 individuals died in motor vehicle crashes,” said Middlesex DA Marian Ryan through a statement. “In that same year, more than 108,0009 people received injuries in motor vehicle crashes in Massachusetts.”
