A man was shot dead by police Tuesday morning after stabbing two school workers at a career-training facility in Tewksbury.

District Attorney Marian Ryan said a man and a woman were stabbed in their car in the parking lot of The Salter School on Woburn Street around 9 a.m. after a 30-year-old man approached their vehicle and slashed their tires.

They are expected to survive.

The suspect, who was not named, wielded a knife as well as a BB gun during the incident. He then fled to a nearby neighborhood. Police shot him when he refused to follow their orders, Ryan said.

Investigators believe the attack on the teachers was not a random act.

“The suspect was known to one of those individuals. We do know that he was observed in the parking lot fairly early this morning,” Ryan said. “What started out as an ordinary day took a tragic turn.”

The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending an investigation, Ryan said.

The Salter School is one of four private vocational campuses in Massachusetts that offers career training programs.
