A pedestrian was hit and killed while walking in one of the southbound travel lanes of Route 128 Thursday night, state police said.

The incident occurred around 10:20 p.m. in Waltham. Officials said that the pedestrian was initially hit by one vehicle while they were on foot and then was subsequently hit by more vehicles. A 61-year-old man in a Nissan Altima hit the pedestrian, followed by other southbound vehicles.

A preliminary investigation found that the person was struck while walking in the second travel lane from the right, about a half-mile before Exit 26.

The pedestrian was found dead at the scene. State police are still working to identify that victim, as well as why they were on the highway and how they got access to the road.

All vehicle drivers stopped at the scene and none had injuries. Troopers did not find an abandoned vehicle on that stretch of the highway that could have belongs to the pedestrian.
