Service on the Braintree branch of the Red Line will be suspended again on Thursday, according to the MBTA.
With snow on Red Line tracks, service on the Braintree section of the Red Line was suspended on Wednesday, forcing Boston-bound commuters to wait in lines for shuttle buses headed to the JFK/UMass MBTA Station in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. Buses, which faced traffic on the streets, also were deployed for the Mattapan trolley line. “Tracks, third rail and switches are encased in snow and ice, making it impossible for Red Line trains to get enough power from the third rail,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in a statement. “To clear the right-of-way, crews are working tirelessly with high-powered snow blowers, shovels, and picks.” Commuters were urged to take the commuter rail, with stops at Braintree, Quincy Center and JFK Stations, but that was also fraught with delays. Earlier on Wednesday morning, people at Quincy Center packed a commuter trail train that took them to South Station. Red Line service on Wednesday was limited between the Alewife and Ashmont MBTA stations.
The MBTA’s Twitter feed laid out the myriad of delays across its transit lines, including the Blue Line “due to a wire problem” and the Green Line “due to a disabled train”.
