A Roxbury woman has been formally charged with the death of her 3-year-old stepson, who died in February, WHDH reported.

The incident in question happened on January 31, 2016 when police responded to call on Alpine Street in Roxbury where they found an unresponsive child. The child’s stepmother Maria Buie, 26, who was the only person taking care of the child at the time of the incident, was accused of assaulting the child.

The child, Kenai Whyt, was taken to Boston Medical Center for medical attention but the toddler succumbed to his injuries and passed on Feb. 2.

“An autopsy found he had a fractured vertebra in the neck, retinal bleeding, bruising to both ears, bruising behind both ears, bruising to the top and head of the scalp, bruising and a contusion to the forehead, scratches to his torso, and a laceration at the base of the penis,” The Boston Herald reported.

Buie turned herself in Roxbury police station Tuesday morning and arrested. Her bail was set at $100,000 with GPS monitoring and an order to have no contact with children under 16 except her baby.

According to a report from The Boston Herald, this isn’t Buie’s first run in with the law: “Maria Buie had at least two previous arrests in Boston, according to court records. In August 2010, she was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a public employee after police say a drunken Buie went into a ‘wild tirade’ in the Financial District when police tried contacting someone to bring her home.”

Buie is due in court for a probable cause hearing on April 28.
