A 26-year-old Salem man who was one of the most wanted fugitives in the country is expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in connection with the 2012 slaying of a U.S. Army veteran.

Authorities say Peter Castillo fatally shot 22-year-old Stephen Perez in the back in a parking garage in Boston’s Theatre District in the spring of 2012. Perez had served two tours in the Middle East as a sniper.

A grand jury indicted Castillo in 2012 on charges of first degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with that fatal shooting.

Castillo fled, first to New York, then to the Dominican Republic, where he has “extensive family ties,” according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

He remained at large for more than two years. Last October, the U.S. Marshals Service placed him to its list of 15 most wanted fugitives. He was arrested in the Dominican Republic on January 15, and extradited to Massachusetts, where he is currently being held.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in the Magistrate Session of Suffolk Superior Court Thursday morning.
