Woman pleads guilty to trafficking five kilos of coke at Logan Airport

A woman pleaded guilty to smuggling nearly five kilograms of cocaine valued at $250,000 in a wheelchair at Logan Airport.

Ireline Aponte Melede, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful import of a controlled substance after flying into Logan from the Dominican Republic on May 10.

According to the U.S. District Attorney’s Office, Customs and Border Patrol x-rayed the inoperable motorized wheelchair and discovered oddities in the battery compartment. What they found instead were four bags of white powder. Tests showed that the powder was cocaine.

Melende faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $1 million fine.

She will be sentenced on March 2, 2016.
