Alex Bowman and Hendrick Motorsports agreed to one-year contract extension through 2021.
Bowman won in California on March 1 to secure a spot in NASCAR’s playoffs and finished second at The Real Heroes 400 in Darlington on Sunday to Kevin Harvick. Bowman led 41 laps and is now second in NASCAR’s point standings ahead of Wednesday’s race at Darlington.
After Sunday’s finish, Bowman said he got a boost from the contract talk being in the rearview mirror.
“Obviously not having to talk about 2021 anymore and just focus on the task at hand and going and contending for a championship is really good,” Bowman said. “Gotta thank Mr. Hendrick and everybody at HMS. Obviously, my career has changed significantly since coming over to HMS and they gave me a big break and I’m very appreciate for that, so really enjoying it, glad to have that squared away and just ready to go try to win some more races.”
Bowman is in his third season at Hendrick. He broke in during the 2017 season when Dale Earnhardt Jr. was forced to sit out because of a concussion.
When Earnhardt retired, Bowman, 27, grabbed his ride fulltime.
Jimmie Johnson, who plans to retire after this season, is the only contract situation pending for Hendrick.
