From its black linen tablecloths, sharply-dressed waitstaff and inspired seasonal décor, Century Grill intends to impress. For a business lunch or romantic dinner, few suburban spots can match it.

For our own romantic dinner, I ordered the Ultimate Experience for Two ($75). Out of the worldly list of wines, my Gnarly Head Zinfandel ($10) provided rich, darkly fruity tones to complement the rest of my meal perfectly.

We started with crisp baby greens under light vinaigrette. The Ultimate Experience platter itself was worthy of its name: A layered potato gratin tower and mound of creamy morel risotto supported vegetables and three delectable meats, though I preferred the exquisite beef tenderloin to the delicately-spiced chicken or grilled prawns. We lingered over our plates, offering a prized bite of this morsel or that to each others’ waiting lips.

As for dessert, I just hope that their recipe for Chocolate Decadence is under armed guard. Its luscious layers of cake and ganache under that sinful raspberry cabernet coulis should be illegal.

With prices low enough to attract the ballcap-and-jeans crowd, Century Grill will never be some elitist urban bistro. I will just have to suffer in silence —and savour the food.
