BPD investigating missing evidence

A package of evidence went missing from the Boston Police Department’s custody, an audit recently revealed.

Investigators from the Boston Police Audit and Review Unit conducting a routine audit of a random sampling of 500 pieces of evidence discovered “a discrepancy as to the location of one package of evidence,” police said.

Police did not say what evidence was contained in the package, which was supposed to be housed at the department’s drug depository.

“The Boston Police Department is taking every appropriate investigative measure to reconcile that discrepancy. Those findings will determine if other investigative steps will be necessary,” said BPD spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll.

The package went missing within the past two weeks, according to the Herald.

This is not the first case of missing evidence within the department.

A 2006 audit revealed hundreds of bags of drugs missing from the Hyde Park depository and hundreds more evidence packages that were tampered with, according to the Herald.
