Brakes slammed on bike lane talks at council

Only three of 38 scheduled speakers got to grind council’s gears yesterday morning over a separated bike lane that has been proposed for Hornby Street.

Council chambers were packed with people wanting to have their say on the proposed $3.2-million separated lane that would connect the bike lanes on the Burrard Bridge and Dunsmuir Street. But time constraints meant the session had to be reconvened to last night.

David Prior, owner of Rumours Hair Salon on Hornby, was among those who addressed council. He said his concerns are accessibility and increased traffic congestion in the area because of restricted right turns.

Jerry Dobrovolny, Vancouver’s director of transportation, said the plan- ners worked with businesses to address their concerns. He said the project’s budget jump to $3.2 million from early estimates of $2.2 million reflected the “significant” increase in the number of loading areas for businesses.
