Branson, city uniting for green cause

Four-and-a-half years after Canada’s only Virgin Megastore closed its shutters, Vancouver has once again coupled with dashing English knight Sir Richard Branson.

Mayor Gregor Robertson, who is attending the UN climate talks in Copenhagen, announced yesterday that the city is partnering with Branson’s Carbon War Room to promote a green-cities initiative.

Branson’s organization looks to entrepreneurs for market-driven solutions to climate change.
The initiative, details of which will be announced during the coming weeks, will be launched during the 2010 Games.

Robertson said it involved inviting a handful of cities and businesses to build a green economy.

In a statement, Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, said he was impressed by the city’s recent Vancouver Green Capital initiative.

“I am looking forward to working with (Robertson) and the City of Vancouver during the Olympics to learn more and find ways to get new support for their ambitious goals,” Branson said.
