Bratton asks City Council to trust NYPD, drop chokehold bill

Top cop Bill Bratton told reporters Thursday his officers need support from the City Council, not a new law making chokeholds illegal.

He called the bill “totally inappropriate, totally unnecessary, misguided, and uninformed.”

“What we do need from them is additional support, not additional activity that just basically, to our officers, indicates a lack of trust and confidence in them,” Bratton said after an event in Brooklyn.

He thanked Mayor Bill de Blasio for opposing the planned Council measure.

Queens Councilman Rory Lancman introduced a bill to outlaw chokeholds last fall, after the arrest and subsequent death of Staten Island man Eric Garner.

The bill has enough votes to pass the body, but de Blasio repeated his commitment to veto it if it comes to his desk as is.

“I’m not going to create a situation where an officer is in that life and death struggle, and, thank God, survives – and then faces criminal charges,” de Blasio said Thursday. “That’s unacceptable.”

Earlier this week, a report by the NYPD inspector general’s office revealed the controversial maneuver was inappropriate used in at least 10 cases it studied with little or no consequence to the officer.

In December, a Staten Island grand jury decliend to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for Garner’s death.

Chokeholdshave been banned by the NYPD since 1993, but are not illegal in New York State.
