Braylon Edwards probably doesn’t think Jets management are “idiots” now.
The Jets brought back the wide receiver, who perhaps never should have left, yesterday. Edwards signed a contract with his old team after he was claimed on waivers.
Edwards, a former first-round pick of the Browns, was traded to the Jets in 2009 and played 28 regular season games with the team. Edwards had his second-best professional season with 53 catches for 904 yards and seven touchdowns with the Jets in 2010. But his contract was not renewed and he has had injury-riddled seasons in San Francisco and Seattle since. He was released by the Seahawks on Monday.
“It feels great to be going home,” Edwards tweeted yesterday after the news. “I’m back and it’s go time.”
The deal comes just a week after Edwards took to Twitter to rip apart the team. Edwards tweeted a message of support for Mark Sanchez after the Jets benched him in the second half of their win over the Cardinals.
“Don’t blame Sanchez. I played there,” Edwards tweeted. “Blame the idiots calling shots. Mark is a beast and will prove it when given a proper chance.”
Edwards later apologized to the Jets’ front office for the comments.
Head coach Rex Ryan praised Edwards on Monday, but didn’t say the team was looking to sign him.
“You guys know what I’ve always said about Braylon in the past, so you know how I feel about him,” Ryan said. “But right now, I think we’ll just focus on the guys we have.”
