PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – An Englishwoman who was badly slashed by machete-wielding assailants at her Tobago home was scheduled to undergo facial reconstructive surgery on Wednesday.
Doctors hope to repair the jaw of 59-year-old Miriam Green, who was attacked over the weekend along with her husband, 65-year-old Peter Green, said Geoff Patton, deputy British high commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago.
Peter Green remains in a medically induced coma, and doctors are waiting for him to stabilize before considering surgery, according to a hospital official who spoke on condition of anonymity he was not authorized to release information.
Police had originally identified the couple as the “Greenes.” They corrected the spelling of their last name on Wednesday.
Authorities have not ruled out robbery as a motive for Saturday’s attack, however police have not been able to question the couple or determine whether anything was taken from their home, said Assistant Police Commissioner Nadir Khan.
Police have interviewed several people who live in the neighbourhood, but no one has been arrested, Khan said.
The couple’s adopted son and another relative are expected to arrive in Trinidad by Thursday, Patton said.
The Greens were attacked about 7 miles (10 kilometres) from where a Swedish couple were killed in a similar home invasion last year.
That case has not been solved, although police detained one man and later released him for lack of evidence.
The British government has issued a travel advisory warning of crime against tourists in Tobago.
