If you’ve slurped oysters outside a seafood market, taken a bite of burrata or savored cannoli on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, this distinction might not be news to you.
Arthur Avenue, which some call “the real Little Italy,” will join the American Planning Association’s “Great Streets of America.” The celebration and official announcement will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Belmont Library and Enrico Fermi Cultural Center, 610 E. 186th St. “We’ve always been proud of Arthur Avenue here in the Bronx, and this recognition shows just how significant this community truly is, for both visitors and residents alike,” Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. said. “The Belmont community is filled with amazing restaurants and shops, and is one of the finest tourist destinations in the region, if not the world, and this award is a tremendous honor for our borough and for this vibrant community.” The American Planning Association is a nonprofit that advocates for and aids in the growth of communities, according to its website. Every year, the community planning association creates a list of Great Places in America in celebration of National Planning Month. Arthur Avenue is one of the classic streets of New York City, combining ethnic and economic diversity and a strong commercial and cultural base, the Bronx borough president’s office said. It celebrates its rich Italian heritage and cultures with restaurants, grocery stores and shops of all kinds, all in dense, compact mixed-used buildings.
