In about a year, restaurants in Brookline will be forbidden from packaging or serving food or drinks in Styrofoam containers – including cups – and will also be unable to hand items over in plastic bags.
While the bans were spawned from environmental concerns, some people feel they are going too far.
“…What’s next, Plastic prescription, water, soda and milk containers?,” said Mike Barry, one of many Boston-area residents to weigh in on social media after the town passed the bans.
At Town Meeting Tuesday night, Brookline voters passed a ban on polystyrene food and beverage containers by a vote of 169 in favor and 27 opposed, and on Wednesday they approved a motion 142-53 to ban the use of polyethylene plastic bags at large retailers.
The bans go into effect on Dec. 13, 2013.
The bans mean Dunkin’ Donuts and other restaurants that serve hot coffee in plastic foam cups will have to find another way to serve beverages.
