Brooklyn brothers accused of forcing out rent-stabilized tenants

Two Brooklyn landlords accused of trashing apartments in hopes of forcing out their rent-stabilized tenants were arrested on burglary and unlawful eviction charges on Thursday.

Brothers Joel and Amrom Israel own at least four rent-stabilized buildings in Bushwick, Williamsburg and Greenpoint. They are accused of cutting off services to tenants, and trashing their units and sealing off the bathrooms and kitchens with plywood while performing routine repairs, according to Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson.

The Israel brothers have been indicted second-degree burglary, scheme to defraud, criminal mischief, unlawful eviction and fraud charges, If convicted, the burglary charge ispunishable by up to 15 years in prison.
