Brooklyn residents showed support for those in Hurricane Irma’s path, packing aid kits this week to send to Puerto Rico. The Category 5 storm made landfall in the Caribbean early Wednesday morning and will be highly destructive and extremely dangerous, according to reports from the National Hurricane Center.
Still living with the damages from Hurricane Sandy, New Yorkers know those preparing for Irma need help now.
“We have to be proactive rather than reactive,” State Assembly Member Felix Ortiz said to ABC7. “Everyone is very tense about what they saw with Harvey and also what they saw with Sandy in New York.”
As the storm hits the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Florida have all been declared in a state of emergency by President Trump.
“As a community we pull our resources together and send out this like love package to make sure that they are safe,” said Brooklyn resident Dennis Flores to ABC7.
Irma will begin to hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
