The owners of a German restaurant in Brooklyn have decided to remove an autographed Donald Trump headshot from the wall of the restaurant after customers complained about it online.

The Schnitzel Haus on Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge had the picture in place since 2007, when the eatery opened, but after recent complaints from customers, the restaurant decided to take it down and replace it with a letter explaining why the photo had been removed, Brooklyn Daily reported. Trump, whose grandfather was a German-American immigrant, had visited the restaurant when it first opened.

“If he wasn’t running for president, we would not even [be] wasting time on here chatting about this,” co-owner Fred Urban’s letter was quoted by Gothamist. “We have removed the picture tonight because I don’t like to waste time defending my right to display a picture in my own restaurant. I am hoping [the] autographed Al Pacino picture didn’t offend you also.”

Reacting to negative comments about the picture primarily posted to Yelp, Urban’s letter claimed he met Trump years ago at a German heritage event at NYU and that the picture was given to them after the mogul visited the restaurant to wish them luck, Gothamist reported.

“Honestly, I was very upset. I don’t know how posting a picture on the wall is promoting hatred,” restaurant co-owner Amber Urban was quoted by Brooklyn Daily. “When you’re hurting my income and taking food off my family’s table, we’re forced to make changes.”

One online reviewer said hanging the Trump photo would be like hanging a picture of Adolf Hitler, Brooklyn Daily added, quoting one Yelp user as saying, “Came here with friends and the food was excellent, true German cuisine. … But I felt uncomfortable. On the wall there is a picture of Donald Trump.”

In an incident with similar anti-Trump sentiment, in July, a Gowanus, Brooklyn, resident claimed his Trump yard sign was torn up and a rock was thrown through his glass front door, and other anti-Trump vandalism has been reported nationwide.
