A Brooklyn high school student drowned while on a school trip to Bear Mountain State Park on Monday.
The 16-year-old boy, who attended International High School in Prospect Heights, was one of two students who broke away from the group to go for a swim in Hessian Lake, authorities said.
Witnesses told The Journal News that they saw the teen jump from a rock into the water, but state park officials did not confirm the events leading up to the incident.
The ninth grader was pulled from the water about 3:50 p.m. and pronounced dead by paramedics a few minutes later, according to The Journal News.
The student’s name has not been released. A total of 48 students and five chaperones were on the trip, according to Department of Education officials.
Hessian Lake lies at the foot of Bear Mountain, about 50 miles from New York City. Swimming is prohibited in the lake.
