Brooklyn Vintage: Crawl your way to fab fall fashion

Over the summer, Kathryn Irby, a former Lucky magazine editor and now vintage store consultant, met Emily Lichtenberg while she was shopping at Antoinette. The two began chatting about their love for scoring old finds when Lichtenberg uttered the magic words: “I take friends on vintage crawls all the time.” Thus, their marriage in thrifting heaven began. This Sunday, the ladies — now business partners — are heading up a massive vintage crawl in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. And you’re invited!

“It’s the perfect opportunity to bring our neighborhood together and support our plethora of local mom-and-pop vintage shops,” says Irby. “We’re partnering with Domino, a Williamsburg-specific mobile app for Crawlers to download our map on their smartphone and receive updates throughout the day,” she says. So call your best friend — you guys have a date this weekend.

What to keep a eye out for:

“The trends for fall actually lean in a vintage direction — the ’70s aesthetic, exquisite fake fur embellishments and lovely open-knit, crochet pieces,” says Irby. “As far as home goods, I’ve noticed a lot of awesome ‘History teacher classroom world maps.’”

Irby’s vintage shopping tips

1. “Most vintage clothing and shoes run smaller than you’d expect. Definitely try the pieces on before purchasing.”

2. “When purchasing vintage shoes — they can often be a bit snug — an easy remedy is to take them to your local shoe repair to have them stretched overnight. Leather and suede always stretch.”

3. “An easy way to ‘eyeball’ if a waistline is going to fit is to stretch the piece from hipbone to hipbone. If it hits your hips and slightly wraps around (about an inch on either side), then it should fit!”
