Victor’s Bar & Grill
5657 Spring Garden Road, Halifax

Rating: ***
Dinner & drinks for 2: $65

Victor’s is a sophisticated yet relaxed restaurant — a place that makes you want to sip a cocktail — in this case, a Cosmo and a James Bond ($5 each).

Our hostess is delightful and down-to-earth. She takes our drink order but then is replaced by an attentive but rather stiff young lad.

Appetizers are two for $14.99. We choose the tasty Coconut Shrimp with tangy Thai mandarin sauce.

There are five, which make me wonder why restaurants don’t serve an even number when guests are sharing. Grill Wings with Victor’s “own blackened secret sauce” are disappointing. The meat is tender on these little wings but the sauce is lackluster and deserves to remain a secret.

My Fettuccine Calamari ($11.99), with hot peppers, herbs and tomato sauce, is loaded with calamari and is delicious. I clean the plate.

My pal’s Famously Built Burger ($9.49) lives up to its reputation. The juicy burger, with accompanying house chips, has lettuce, tomato and onion to which he adds blue cheese ($1.49). We sip our Sleeman’s Honey Brown ($5.31) and declare dinner mostly pleasing indeed.
