Bus driver hospitalized after attack

A Calgary Transit bus driver was assaulted yesterday morning after stopping at an unmarked stop in the community of Saddleridge.

Police said the attack happened at around 7:20 a.m., when three males boarded the bus after the driver picked them up at the side of the road. They allegedly assaulted the driver, spray-painted his face and left him with a cut.

“The descriptions are very minimal at this time, but the investigation is continuing,” said Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski.

Gawlinski said that the driver may have been unconscious at some point and was transferred to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Theresa Keddy, communications strategist for Calgary Transit, said assaults on bus drivers are rare, but precautions are taken.

Keddy said when in motion, the bus driver can press an emergency button or apply the brakes quickly to activate a camera to record what is happening on the bus.

“That has helped considerably with driver and customer safety,” said Keddy.

However, Keddy said the bus was stopped at the time of the attack, and there isn’t any footage of the incident.
