Busy skateway site of human chain for Haiti

Skaters on the Rideau Canal are encouraged to come together for Haiti this weekend.

More specifically, the National Capital Commission and the Canadian Red Cross are asking people to gather on the Skateway at 3 p.m. on Saturday to form a human chain in a show of solidarity for Haiti.

“We hope to be able to have close to a 7.8-kilometre human chain along the canal with members of the Haitian community, visitors and residents to show our support for the people of Haiti,” said David Fraser, president of the Canadian Red Cross Ottawa Branch Council. The NCC has also set up 17 donation boxes to collect funds for Haiti.

Senator Jim Munson is also accepting pledges for a 100-km skate-a-thon over the weekend.

The skateway will be a busy place during the first weekend of Winterlude. On Saturday morning, hundreds of people will compete in the 27th annual Winterlude Triathlon. The skate-ski-run event starts at Dow’s Lake at 7:30 a.m. Once that race is over, the fun begins with the Bedzzz 30th annual Bed Race at 12:30 p.m, also at Dow’s Lake.
