Calculate your holiday tips using real NYC doormen data

For apartment dwellers, the holidays mean more than getting tipsy at parties — it means tips for those that help us out during the year — from doormen to dog walkers.

Even if you don’t have a dog, at the very least, you will need to tip your super.

Though your super or doorman may appreciate the same snazzy tie that you got your father, he would rather get cold, hard cash this time of year.

But how much should you give? Agents at technology-based real estate startup TripleMint spoke to more than 100 doorman around Manhattan, from downtown to uptown, to compile a digital tipping calculator.

The tool is broken down into the following categories: rent vs. own; apartment size; length of living in apartment; building size; use of building staff; and type of tipper.

If you rent a one-bedroom in a building with 50 or less units, lived in the place for two years or less, only use your building staff occasionally and are on a budget then you should tip your super, concierge or doorman about $50 to $65 this year.

For those that really can’t spare any extra cash this year, Emily Post suggests homemade gifts.

“It’s important to remember that holiday tipping is truly about saying thank you. With a little creativity you can accommodate everyone on your list this year without blowing your budget,” EmilyPost.com says.

No matter the gift, it should come with a “short handwritten note of appreciation,” Emily Post also suggests. If you tip regularly, a note or small gift should be enough.
