Calgarians must really not like paying taxes

A silver medal not to be proud of, Calgary ranks second to Toronto as Canada’s most tax-procrastinating city, according to QuickTax.

Based the number of people filing their taxes on April 29 and 30, 2009, via QuickTax Online, a list of offending cities was generated. Toronto took the top spot for the third year running while Calgary held onto second position once again. Reasons for last-minute filing are as varied as Calgarians themselves.

Many claim that a lack of time or low income is to blame. “My yearly income isn’t enough for me to worry about money owed,” says Pat McLeod, a bar tender in the downtown core.

“I plan to get on it as soon as I can to get those GST cheques flowing again.”

McLeod usually goes through a private tax office to get his filing in on time, but this year he is considering asking a family member to help out. “I’m not too worried,” says McLeod.

Income taxes are due Friday at midnight. Procrastinators are encouraged to file their taxes online through companies such as QuickTax.
