Calgary man found dead after avalanche

A missing Calgary hiker has been found dead in Canmore, Alta., by a Parks Canada search dog just an hour after the search began.

The man was found buried under half a metre of snow just before noon Thursday by a search dog, a tragic ending since RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb had been hopeful they would find the man alive.

The 37-year-old hiker was swept away in an avalanche on Wednesday afternoon in the Three Sisters Dam area of Canmore. Another hiker alerted authorities.

Officials won’t be releasing the name of the victim until his next of kin are notified. The man’s body has been removed from the region.

The initial search on Wednesday was called off due to high avalanche risks and darkness.
