California road sign hacked to display crude message about President Trump

A savvy person hacked into a California road sign and changed its display to a crude message for President Trump, and the burning message went viral.

Drivers were surprised to see a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) sign read “TRUMP HAS HERPES” along Interstate 80 on Wednesday night.

According to CBS 13 Sacramento, the sign was located on the eastbound side of I-80 near the University of California, Davis, just west of Sacramento.

Instagram user Janet Thompson noticed the sign and posted a photo of the prank to her account. Shortly after it was posted, it began popping up on Twitter.

Since then, explicit message on the sign has been changed back to display the regular traffic message.

According to the Good Day Sacramento, a Caltrans spokesperson said the sign is part of a nearby bridge construction project and doesn’t appear to have been broken into. They said the sign is locked with a password and they are not sure how it was changed. Officials from Caltrans are investigating the matter.

Of course, when something like this happens, Twitter chimes in to provide commentary.

Twitter reacts to ”TRUMP HAS HERPES” traffic sign in California

Stay classy, California. This isn’t the first time a traffic sign was hacked to display a message different than what it was originally intended for.

In June, a green highway exit sign along Long Island’s Sagtikos State Parkway was defaced and manipulated to read “Crooked Hillary” for a brief period of time.

Last year, a road sign similar to the one in California was hacked into in Ontario, Canada. However, instead of a message aimed at a president or politician, it was hacked to display NSFW messages to motorists, including a few tips about sexual health. The video was posted to Instagram.
