Canada Games Oval opens

After a nasty warm weather delay, the Canada Games Oval will open to the public today with a bang.

The opening ceremonies for the long-track speed skating venue on the Halifax Common will start at 5 p.m. with the first public skate starting at 6 p.m. It’s dependent on the weather, but Canada Games spokeswoman Andrea Young said the forecast should work in their favour.

“The ice surface is looking good for (today’s) opening event,” she said.

Young said the ice surface is skatable if the temperature stays below 10 C.

Local speed skaters will take to the ice to show off what they can do during the ceremony.

“We’re really excited to get the public on the ice,” Young said.

And there’s been a lot of activity on social media sites regarding today’s opening of the Canada Games Oval.

“It seems like there’s a lot of excitement around,” Young said.
