Canada needs to pick its battles as U.S. climate legislation barrels ahead: Expert

CALGARY – The man who heads a federal roundtable on the environment and economy says Canada is not even on the United States’ radar screen when it comes to climate change legislation.

Robert Page says Canada needs to figure out how to make its voice heard as a new American clean energy act barrels ahead with “frightening” speed.

The ambitious American Clean Energy and Security Act cleared a U.S. House committee last week, bringing it one step closer to passing into law.

Page, who was speaking with a business audience in Calgary, says Canada needs to work out complementary policies to the United States to ensure that it is not hurt by the new legislation.

The University of Calgary professor says Canada needs to make itself valuable to the United States, and suggests one way could be by developing carbon capture technologies.

He says Canada will also need to have a strong voice at the upcoming global conference on climate change to be held in Denmark.
