CanJet drama hits home for airport’s ‘large family’

To say Dawn Way was worried about the safety of her friends aboard CanJet Flight 918 is an understatement.

“Your heart goes out to them,” Way, a customer service agent at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, said while taking a brief break from work yesterday morning.

“Not only for the crew, but as well for the passengers … you look for the safety of all the souls that are onboard.”

Way spent about five years working for CanJet before moving to WestJet in 2006, but called everyone who works at the airport “a large family.”

She said she knows the pilot who was supposed to fly the highjacked plane, and one of the flight attendants

“Everybody supports everyone else — especially when things like this happen,” she said.

Janice Stephenson of Halifax was at the airport Monday seeing her daughter off on a trip to Australia.

“It certainly makes you more aware,” she said. “But something like that, you could never predict.”

Hilary Stephenson, 26, said it’s strange that the gunman got through security, especially with all the tough rules for passengers these days.

“I’m not allowed to bring my hand cream,” she pointed out.
