Canucks GM given role of president

Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis was named president of Canucks Sports and Entertainment yesterday, taking over for Chris Zimmerman.

Together with chief operating officer Victor de Bonis, Gillis will also be responsible for areas such as broadcasting, marketing, sponsorship and ticket sales.

The team also said that Seattle Seahawks CEO and former Canucks senior executive Tod Leiweke would join the Canucks as a special adviser.

“Most of my responsibilities will remain with hockey operations and I see this as a more of a transitional role between the business side of the company and the hockey operations side of the company,” Gillis said during a conference call.

“I don’t see this detracting (from) my priority, which is hockey operations.”
