Canucks look at policies

After Luc Bourdon’s death yesterday, Vancouver Canucks’ GM Mike Gillis said new policies will be considered to keep athletes from engaging in risky behaviour.

“Clearly, moving forward, we are most definitely going to implement policies or educational programs, not only for events like riding a motorcycle but anything that may impact or affect a career,” Gillis said from Toronto in a conference call yesterday.

The former player agent also said that in his previous role, he cautioned clients against doing anything that could impair or end their careers.

He didn’t go into details of what activities he warned players against or what might be banned in the future.

Gillis added that every player on the Canucks and the Manitoba Moose has been notified of Bourdon’s death, but wouldn’t comment on what the organization might plan for a memorial until the family is contacted.

“We’re going to do whatever the family thinks is the right thing to do.”
