Car crash kills Middlesex corrections officer

A corrections officer working an overnight shift crashed a cruiser this morning in Billerica and died.

Edward “Teddy” Dillon, III, 27, of Lowell, crashed on Treble Cove Road about 4:30 a.m., authorities said.

Dillon, a corrections officer with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office since 2008, was working the midnight to 8 a.m. shift at the Middlesex House of Correction in Billerica. His job included routine perimeter checks of the facility and nearby sheriff’s office property.

“My thoughts and prayers, as well as those of the entire Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, go out to Officer Dillon’s family, friends and colleagues. We know the work of correction officers is difficult and dangerous, but that does nothing to ease the pain and shock when we lose one of our own. The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office will work to ensure that our officers and the Dillon family have the support they need as we grieve Teddy’s passing,” Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said in a statement.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

State and local police are investigating.
