Carell and Fey: It’s a date!

In “Date Night,” Tina Fey and Steve Carell star as a couple trying to put the spark back in their marriage. But despite the topic, the stars — both happily married — are hesitant to offer any marriage advice. “We don’t want to pretend to be marriage experts,” Fey says. “If I was in a movie about a hospital, I would not give medical advice.”

But Carell is willing to give it a try. “As a person who has been married for a while, I would say what works for my wife and I is to just communicate and let each other know consistently in very subtle ways that we care and that we’re there for each other,” he says. “I don’t think it’s so much the big, grand gestures, but it’s kind of the little things that thread through a relationship.”

Both actors admit that their success on TV — Fey has won numerous Emmys and Golden Globes for “30 Rock,” while Carell is a four-time Emmy nominee for “The Office” — has raised their profiles, but Carell still doesn’t really consider himself famous. “I don’t walk around feeling famous, that’s for sure,” he says. “I feel like I work and I go home and I’m with my family, and I hang out with them most of the time. I think I’m a little shy.”

For Fey, being recognizable can be both good and bad, depending on the circumstance. “It’s not a constant problem by any means,” she says. “You kind of wish you could turn it on and off. Like if you could be recognized when you’re trying to get into a restaurant, and then turn it off when you’re going out to buy, like, acne cream.”
