Brooklyn’s Steiner Studios and Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University are teaming up to bring the next applied sciences program to New York City.
“With a home at Steiner Studios in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, Carnegie Mellon’s Integrative Media Program will blend technology and the arts while giving students the opportunity to learn – and work – alongside professionals in the field,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a statement.
The Integrative Media Program will offer two new master’s degrees in Emerging Media and Game Design, while also offering master’s degrees in urban design, computational data science, production technology and management, and integrative innovation in products and services.
“The convergence of media and technology is real, and its epicenter belongs in New York City,” said Steiner Studios Chairman Douglas C. Steiner.
The school will be housed inside a 16,000-square-foot facility at 25 Washington Ave. It is expected to open in August 2015 with 40 matriculated students and 10 visiting students each year.
In addition to $3.5 million contributed by the city, Carnegie Mellon also announced an anonymous multimillion-dollar gift that will go toward the establishment of the program.
The three other applied sciences programs in the city are the Cornell University and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology campus on Roosevelt Island; the Center for Urban Science and Progress in Downtown Brooklyn; and the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering at Columbia University.
