The Calgary Chamber of Commerce is throwing its support behind an alderman’s motion to lower downtown parking fees to lure more Calgarians to the core.
On Monday, Ward 8 Ald. John Mar will put forward a motion to reduce on-street downtown parking by 25 per cent.
In a letter sent to the city, the Chamber is urging council to consider a roll-back on rates and to consider free parking on Saturdays, according to Chamber president Heather Douglas.
“Our members believe that rates are too high, and have become a real impediment to everyone who does business, shops or works in the downtown core,” Douglas added.
Caralyn Macdonald of the Calgary Downtown Association said it fully supports the motion, as members have expressed concern that business is slowing in the area.
